The Hidden Dog Nook: Beautiful Under-Stair Storage Ideas for Dog Lovers

Two French bulldogs resting on a cream bolster bed beneath a walnut staircase, with warm concealed lighting, brass-handled storage, hanging leads and a low pull-out drawer holding stainless-steel feeding bowls.
The idea for Margaret and Barbara: a bed within sight of the lounge, with leads, bowls and spare supplies tucked into the surrounding joinery. Supplied inspiration image.

Margaret, Barbara and the lounge-room floor

We have two French bulldogs, Margaret and Barbara. They love being nearby, and we want them nearby too. What isn't ideal is how much of the lounge room their beds take up.

It's useful space, especially when guests come over. But putting the dogs somewhere away from us would miss the point. The idea behind this nook is to give them a comfortable spot under the stairs, within eye-shot of the lounge, so they can still see us and we can see them.

Their bed has a place of its own. Leads, bowls and the rest of their things have somewhere to go. The lounge gets its floor space back without Margaret and Barbara being shut away from it.

Close enough to feel part of the room

The sightline is the detail we'd plan first. An under-stair dog bed makes sense here because it can stay connected to the lounge. The same bed tucked into a hallway out of view wouldn't solve the same problem.

Before choosing finishes or drawing cupboards, check the view from the sofa and from the bed. Then check the space itself: can both dogs get in, turn around and stretch out comfortably? Leave room for separate beds if sharing doesn't suit them. The opening needs to work for the dogs, not just fit neatly under the stair.

The lower part of the staircase lends itself to a resting spot. Taller sections can hold the things that would otherwise sit around it. That's what makes under-stair storage useful in this design: it deals with the bed and the belongings together.

When people come over

Being able to put the dog things away easily is a large part of the appeal. Close the storage cupboards, tuck spare bedding into a drawer and slide the feeding tray back when it's finished with. There's less to gather up from the lounge before everyone arrives.

The aim is to hide the stuff, not shut the dogs inside. Keep their resting space open whenever they're using it. If a design includes a door or panel to conceal the bed as well, close it only when the nook is empty and the dogs have another comfortable place to settle. Fresh water still needs to be available.

What we'd borrow from this design

A bed that can come out

The cream bed pictured sits comfortably against the dark timber. We'd choose the actual bed before sizing the joinery, with enough sleeping space inside the bolsters and a cover that comes off for washing. The whole bed needs to lift out too, so the floor and back corners can be cleaned properly.

Cream is lovely here, but easy care matters more than the colour. Check what can be washed: the cover, the padded sides and the foam may all have different instructions. An ‘orthopaedic’ product label isn't medical advice; ask your vet about support if your dog needs it.

Storage beside the bed

The narrow cupboard for leads is a good use of the taller space. Hooks keep them separate, while smaller drawers can hold grooming tools and spare collars. A lift-out basket would be enough for toys. There's no need to make every compartment complicated.

Keep treats sealed and out of reach, and store medicines and cleaning products securely elsewhere. Woven baskets work only if your dogs leave them alone; they aren't chew-proof.

Bowls that tuck away after meals

The low feeding drawer is one of the most useful details in the image. Bowls come out at mealtimes and the tray goes back afterwards. It needs stable runners, secure stops, removable bowls and a finish that can cope with spills. A joiner would need to detail the drawer and bowl cut-outs; buying bowls alone won't recreate it.

Keep the height and bowl depth suitable for your dogs rather than assuming raised feeding is better. And don't put their only water supply in a drawer that gets closed. A separate, always-accessible water bowl may be the simplest answer.

Timber, warm light and very little else

The walnut tones, cream bedding and brass-coloured handles are why this feels at home beside a lounge. We'd repeat materials already used in the room rather than give the dog area a different look. A durable veneer or timber-look finish may make more sense than solid walnut where regular cleaning and scratches are likely.

The concealed lighting is a nice addition, not the reason the nook works. Keep it warm, around 2700K–3000K, dimmable and directed away from the dogs' eyes. The USB strips in the edit below need protected cables and a suitable power supply; fixed wiring needs a licensed electrician. Follow the fitting's heat clearances and keep batteries and connectors out of reach.

Three Ways to Create Your Own Dog Nook

The Simple Styling Upgrade

If you're not renovating, start with a bed in a quiet spot within sight of the sofa. Add a washable blanket, low bowls and one basket for toys. Use an existing cupboard for spare supplies. You can get the everyday benefit of this idea without having anything built.

The Thoughtful Furniture Upgrade

An open alcove beside a low cabinet might already give you the bed space and storage you need. Check the clearance and airflow, keep the entrance clear and use the cabinet to hide the supplies when guests arrive. Don't remove furniture supports or force a bed into an opening that's too small.

The Bespoke Built-In

For a built-in version, take the bed dimensions and the lounge-room sightline to your joiner first. Work out the storage and feeding drawer alongside the sleeping opening, then resolve lighting with an electrician where needed. Spend on safe construction, cleaning access and durable surfaces before the smaller finishing details.

More useful ideas for a home that works

If you're working through storage elsewhere, these are worth a look too — especially the laundry baskets and the closed storage in the entry.

Under-stair dog nook questions

How do you create a dog bed under the stairs?

Measure the usable opening and your dog's resting footprint first. Choose a removable, washable bed, leave comfortable standing and turning space, and keep the entrance open. For built-in work, ask a qualified professional to check staircase structure, services and local safety requirements before changing the enclosure.

Is under-stair space suitable for a dog?

It can be, if the space is cool, ventilated, accessible and large enough for that dog. It should be a voluntary resting spot, not a closed enclosure. Avoid hot fittings, exposed wiring, damp areas and household chemicals. If your dog avoids the nook, provide another comfortable bed rather than forcing the arrangement.

How do you hide dog beds in a living room?

An open recess within sight of the lounge can take the bed off the main floor area. Nearby closed storage can hide the spare supplies. If a panel conceals the bed itself, close it only when the space is empty, never with dogs inside. A neutral bed in a quiet corner is a simpler option if built-in work isn't practical.

How can you organise dog accessories in a small home?

Keep walking supplies near the exit, toys in one removable container and grooming items in a divided drawer. Store food in sealed containers and medicines securely out of reach. A small number of clearly assigned places is easier to maintain than a large cupboard without divisions.

For us, it comes back to Margaret and Barbara. We want them close, but we also need the lounge room to work for the people using it. A bed within sight and a cupboard for their things feels like a sensible way to have both.

Dog beds

Three neutral, supportive options, from a simpler cream bed to a roomier two-sided bolster. None is the exact bed pictured. Compare the usable sleeping area, not just the outer dimensions; one medium bed is not automatically enough for two dogs.

Tedi’s Linen

Tedi’s Orthopedic Dog Calming Bed — Medium, Cream

A 71 × 58 × 20cm cream bed with memory-foam support, four-sided bolsters and a removable machine-washable cover. The inner foam is not washable.

An accessible way to soften an open recess while keeping the cover removable for everyday cleaning.

COZY KISS

Orthopedic Rectangle Dog Bed — Cream, 76 × 58 × 18cm

Cream faux-fur sleeping surface with egg-crate foam support and raised sides. The listing specifies a removable washable cover; the padded sides are not removable.

A slightly more generous cream option with a soft edge against dark cabinetry. Check the care instructions for each component.

WINDRACING

Orthopedic Dog Sofa Bed — Medium, Beige

A beige corduroy-surface bed, approximately 78.7 × 63.5 × 16.5cm, with egg-crate foam, two L-shaped bolster sides and removable washable covers. The maker recommends this size for dogs up to about 13.6kg.

The open sides give a dog more room to stretch and an easier entrance than a fully enclosed bolster. Measure your dog rather than relying on its breed.

Feeding accessories

Low bowls and washable mats for a separate feeding spot. These accessories do not supply the custom pull-out drawer or its mechanism.

Loving Pets

7404 Bella Dog Bowl — Black, Small

A small low-profile bowl with a stainless-steel interior and black outer finish. Check the rim and base dimensions before considering it for a joiner's bowl cut-out.

Keeps the useful surface easy to clean without bringing a tall feeding stand into the room.

SMILOOL

Silicone Feeding Mat — Brown, 19 × 12in

A brown silicone mat, approximately 48 × 30cm, with a raised edge for food and water spills.

A straightforward way to protect the floor at an always-accessible water station. Empty pooled water and clean regularly.

Sinland

Microfiber Pet Feeding Mat — Grey, 53 × 83cm

A generous grey absorbent microfiber mat for a freestanding bowl area. Unlike silicone, the textile absorbs spills and needs washing and drying.

An alternative for a larger feeding footprint when a soft, washable surface suits the room better than a rigid tray.

Warm integrated lighting

Two manually dimmable 3000K options. These are USB-powered strips, not complete hardwired joinery systems; confirm power supply, mounting, heat clearances and cable protection with the installer.

Explore warm integrated lighting

Clearhill

USB COB LED Strip — Warm White 3000K, 2m

An 8mm-wide, 5V USB strip with an inline dimmer and remote. Indoor IP20 rating; it is not waterproof. A USB power adapter is not included.

A narrow continuous line can sit behind a concealed lip. Secure the wiring and keep the remote's button battery completely beyond pet and child access.

OVILUX

Dimmable USB Neon Flex Light — Warm White 3000K, 5m

A silicone-covered 5m strip with a touch dimmer and warm-white light. The USB connection and controller must stay dry, even though the strip has a water-resistant enclosure.

The covered light source is a useful alternative when you want a continuous glow rather than exposed LED points. Check bend radius and mounting clearance.

Beautiful pet storage

Lift-out baskets and divided trays keep the toys, spare leads and grooming supplies together. None is chew-proof, and all need to fit the actual cabinet.

CHICVITA

Rectangle Cotton Rope Basket — White

A white cotton-rope basket with brown-wrapped handles, approximately 36.8 × 33 × 15.2cm. The listing's style and dimension labels vary, so confirm the selected size before ordering for a tight niche.

A low, removable home for toys that sits more quietly beside cream bedding than a novelty pet bin.

Amalfi

Anguila Baskets — Natural, 2 Piece Set

Natural woven baskets listed as a 26/38cm pair. Check both footprints and heights against the intended shelf or cupboard.

Use one for toys and one for spare bedding, with both able to lift out when the cabinetry needs cleaning.

STOBAZA

Bamboo Drawer Organizer Boxes — 3 Piece Set

Three bamboo organising boxes for small household items. Confirm each tray's dimensions against the drawer's clear internal space.

Divides grooming tools and spare collars into visible groups rather than leaving them tangled at the bottom of a deep drawer.

Everyday pet accessories

Tan leather and a neutral washable blanket repeat the room's material palette. Choose walking equipment for your dog's fit and needs, not solely for its finish.

Ancol

Heritage Leather Lead — Tan, 1m × 19mm

A tan leather lead listed at 1m long and 19mm wide. The checked Amazon Australia offer is an Amazon UK import; delivery and return terms may differ from locally shipped items.

A simple leather lead looks at home on the cupboard hooks and has a clear everyday purpose. Check its suitability for your dog and harness.

DowgClub

Genuine Leather Dog Collar — Tan, Medium

Padded leather with brass hardware; the medium is 1in wide and fits the maker's listed 14.5–18.5in neck range, approximately 37–47cm. Check the current size chart and fit carefully.

The tan and brass echo the cabinetry without making the collar a decorative prop. A collar is not a substitute for a suitable walking harness.

PetAmi

Waterproof Dog Blanket — Taupe Beige, 40 × 60in

A reversible washable fleece pet blanket, approximately 102 × 152cm, in taupe/beige, with a protective waterproof layer.

Adds a removable layer over the bed for cleaning between cover washes. Keep it loose enough to remove easily and avoid over-warming the nook.

Architectural finishing touches

Secondary details, after the sleeping space and storage are resolved. Brushed-gold aluminium is a brass-toned finish, not solid brass.

Fiabgum

Brushed Gold Cabinet Pulls — 128mm, 10 Pack

Aluminium handles in a brushed-gold finish, with 128mm hole spacing. Match the fixing centres and included screw lengths to your cabinetry.

Repeats the warm metal tone at the drawers without pretending these are solid-brass investment hardware.

U+BAOBO LIFEL

Walnut Wood Picture Frame — 4 × 6in

A small walnut-wood frame with an acrylic front; takes a 4 × 6in photograph, or 3 × 5in with the mat.

One personal photograph is enough. Place it on a secure shelf beyond the dogs' reach rather than filling the nook with objects.

Elme Living

Olsen Ceramic Pot — Cream, 14cm

A cream ceramic pot listed at 14 × 14 × 12cm. Check whether drainage and a separate saucer are needed for your plant.

A single neutral pot softens the timber. Choose a pet-safe plant and keep leaves, soil and the pot inaccessible to chewing.
