The Functional Laundry: When Every Detail Has a Job
A laundry doesn't need more cabinetry. It needs better-placed cabinetry.

Most laundries are designed backwards. The cabinetry goes in first, the appliances are slotted wherever they fit, and the way the room is actually used gets worked out afterwards — usually with a basket on the floor and a pile of folding on the bench.
This Space Well Spent laundry started from the other end: the task itself. Wash, sort, fold, hang, store. Every surface, drawer and shelf was placed to serve one of those steps, in roughly the order they happen.
The result is a room where almost every design decision has a practical purpose — and looks better for it.
1. Raise the appliances
Front-loading machines placed directly on the floor mean a lot of bending for a task that happens several times a week. Lifting the washer and dryer onto a raised plinth brings the door openings closer to a comfortable working height, so loading and unloading becomes a reach rather than a crouch.
It also changes how the appliances read in the room. Framed by full-height timber cabinetry, with a lit shelf above, they stop looking like appliances pushed against a wall and start looking like part of the joinery.
2. Put the folding surface where the laundry is
The cleverest move in this room is the one you might not notice at first: a pull-out timber surface directly beneath the washer and dryer.
When it's out, clean washing comes straight from the drum onto a surface at the right height for sorting and folding. When it's in, it disappears — no permanently oversized benchtop taking up floor space for a job that lasts twenty minutes.
“Good storage isn't just about where something lives. It's about where you need it.”
That's the principle in miniature. The surface isn't bigger than it needs to be. It's simply in the right place.
3. Give the laundry baskets a home
Beneath the folding surface, three woven baskets sit in a deep drawer of their own. They're within arm's reach of the machines, but they aren't sitting in the middle of the floor or stacked in a corner.
Having more than one also makes a simple household system easy: darks, lights and delicates, or one basket per person. Sorting happens as clothes come in, rather than on the floor before every wash.

Seen front-on, the logic is easier to read. The machines sit on a stone ledge, and directly beneath them a timber shelf slides out — somewhere to rest a full basket while you unload, and a clean surface to fold onto before anything touches a bench. When the washing is done, it slides back and the floor is clear again.
Below that, one deep drawer holds three woven baskets side by side. Because the drawer pulls out fully, each basket can be lifted straight up rather than dragged from the back of a cupboard. Warm strip lighting under the shelves, walnut cabinetry and concealed handles keep the whole wall reading as furniture rather than a utility zone.

4. Create somewhere to hang
Beside the sink, a short hanging rail sits beneath the upper cabinetry. It's a small detail, but it solves a familiar problem: the shirt that needs to air dry, the jacket waiting to be steamed, the pieces that shouldn't go in the dryer and have nowhere else to go.
Good functional design often comes from solving these small, everyday annoyances. Nobody notices a hanging rail until they need one — and then it's the most useful thing in the room.
5. Use full-height storage for the ugly stuff
Not everything in a laundry needs to be on display. Tall, concealed cabinetry is where the vacuum cleaner, mop and broom, ironing equipment, cleaning products, bulk household supplies, spare linen, towels and laundry products belong.
Behind flush timber doors with minimal hardware, all of it disappears into the architecture. The open shelving is then free for the few things worth seeing: folded towels, a plant, well-designed bottles.
6. Keep a second work zone
The sink and stone benchtop sit apart from the washer and dryer, giving the room two distinct zones rather than one crowded wall.
That separation matters. It leaves space for hand washing, treating stains, filling a bucket or decanting laundry products without working around a machine mid-cycle — and it means two people can use the room at once.
7. Make the practical part beautiful
A utility space doesn't need to feel utilitarian. The palette here is deliberately warm: timber cabinetry, textured stone on the walls and benchtop, woven natural baskets, warm neutral tones and integrated lighting that washes the shelves rather than glaring from the ceiling.
Hardware is kept to a minimum and the cabinetry runs full height, so the room reads as architecture rather than furniture. The functionality isn't added afterwards. It's built into the bones of the space.
The SWS Principle
“The goal isn't more storage. It's having the right storage in the right place.”
The best functional spaces anticipate how people actually move through them. In a laundry, that movement is surprisingly consistent:
- Dirty laundry
- Sort
- Wash
- Dry
- Fold
- Hang
- Put away
If you're designing or renovating a laundry, map this process before deciding where a single cabinet goes. The layout tends to follow on its own.

TRUSLIDE Locking Heavy-Duty Drawer Slides, 227kg
Why it earns its place: A pull-out folding shelf is only useful if it stays put while you lean on it. These lock open, and the load rating leaves plenty of margin for a full basket. A job for your joiner or a confident installer.
